Georgia 2000 Information System adds new occupation, income, housing data

UGA Office of Information Technology Outreach Services. December 5, 2002.

ITOS - Athens, Ga. -- The University of Georgia announces the addition of new Census data to the Georgia 2000 Information System (http://www.georgia2000.org), a public online resource maintained by UGA's Public Service and Outreach branch.

This recent data from the U.S. Census Bureau provides demographic information on income, occupation and travel to work, industry, housing and rent costs, education, and residence throughout Georgia and adjacent states. Census 2000 data concerning population levels, race, age distribution and housing has been incorporated into Georgia 2000 as it became available from the U.S. Census Bureau.

This update to the interactive site ensures that the most current information on occupation, income and housing costs becomes available for combination with existing information on populations, education, health, etc., in Georgia 2000's online geographic information and reporting system.

Through Georgia 2000's free Web interface, a range of public information from multiple databases can be combined, analyzed, and custom-mapped at the desktop. Relational databases allow custom selection of regions, data types, and reporting scales (e.g., block group, county, ZIP code), making Georgia 2000 a powerful and versatile tool for business and economic development, service delivery, family services, and decision-making by individuals, companies, and government. As new layers are developed for the site, the range of possibilities for integrated research and study is expanded.

Georgia 2000 is a product of UGA's Information Technology Outreach Services (ITOS). As a land- and sea-grant University, UGA has a mission to bring the benefits of its research and instruction to all Georgians. The site, developed from an earlier project which provided economic development information for small businesses, now serves many sectors in the public and private arenas.
